University of Ottawa Adult Critical Care Medicine Program

Over the 24-month training period, our training Program provides 3 months of Research elective time to facilitate the generation of a scholarly project. All residents are expected to present their project, each June, at the Program’s Scholarly Project & Graduation Day.

The goals are twofold;
1. Provide an introduction to and practical experience with the formal research process.
2. To nurture the attitude that scholarly work is a fundamental part of clinical practice.

The Program has a research coordinator who meets with all residents, each July and individually thereafter, to discuss the variety of scholarly projects that a resident can choose to conduct with the help of a Faculty mentor.

Research Opportunities in Ottawa

Our department boasts a well established and nationally recognized tradition of conducting research for the critically ill patient. We have a collaborative team that is well-trained, motivated, and dynamic and we have the necessary research infrastructure to support this terrific team. Many of our research programs are recognized nationally and internationally and include the study of resuscitation and transfusion, monitoring the variability of complex physiological systems, drug safety and compatibility in the critically ill and vascular health in the peril-operative patient population. Research conducted by the Department of Critical Care in Ottawa is done through teamwork, mentorship and through collaborative links with the highly-respected and productive Canadian Critical Care Trials Group.

Our research infrastructure fosters and supports multi-disciplinary research among critical care intensivists, nurses, pharmacists and nutritionists. We are closely linked with the Centre for Transfusion research team, the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI), the institution that governs all research conducted at the Ottawa Hospital, the Ottawa Hospital Methods Centre that provides the methodologic infrastructure to enable the conduct of excellent peer-reviewed research, and with the University’s Academy for Innovation in Medical Education (AIME) that provides opportunities to conduct medical education research.

Due to the breadth and depth of research expertise within our Department, there are many opportunities to pursue formal research training for critical care physicians who aim to pursue a career in research through a research fellowship or our clinical scholar program. Both of these avenues have a proven track record for producing successful clinical researchers.
